From a coworker:

"Last week of last Month I managed to travel to Mueda-Mozambique. It was so crazy when you talk about Jesus or God. They ask: Who are those people? They are completely in total darkness. Well, with my friends we managed to stay there for a week talking and preaching about Jesus. It was absolutely a beautiful time out there. Now the reason for writing this, when we were leaving, they said: "You taught us about that Jesus; where will we find him?" They don't have Bibles or Christian literatures. In what way can GRN be part of this project? ... of producing Makonde language Bibles for a start we can say 500 bibles, the Swahili language, they do speak Swahili as well....so, about 500 Swahili and Portuguese 150."

"They believe in tradition rituals, lots of witch craft, drunkenness, prostitution, majority are illiterate few can read.... language spoken Makonde mainly, then Swahili and then Portuguese.

"Youth: They don't want to go to school, because of early marriage, by the age of 4 they give them a tradition dance on how to know a man, by age eleven they have to get marriage. A girl with 16 years may have 3 or 4 children."

After going through the reearch material we have of the Makonde, we recommended the following approach in termns of content:

The Makonde language (ISO code: kde) has scriptures available, including the New Testament and some Old Testament books.

But it will probably be vital to add as many of the Old Testament content as possible, so that the people can make the connection between the true Creation story and Jesus - as chronologically as possible. If we start with Jesus, they're likely to just attach that to what they already believe. So, we need to start with these materials, first the Look, Listen & Live 1-8 followed by the Good News and then adding to that any audio Scriptures.

By itself audio Scriptures is visually formless and a lot to process or internalise without a visual framework, structure or reference in their minds.

We also suspect that Makonde would work better than Portuguese or Swahili, because the women and children are likely not to undertand anything else than Makonde (also hence the low school attendance). And if former engagement with Biblical content is so low, communication is likely to be more effective in Makonde, rather than Swahili or Portuguese.

Thank you for considering to support this project of first engagement content to the Makonde. We would like to start with the following:

100 x LLL1-8 flip chart picture books = 800 books = R60,000 ($5,160 AUD)
500 x Good News flip chart picture books = R45,000 ($3,870 AUD)
500x audio playback devices (100 loaded also with LLL1-8, the rest only with GN and Scriptures) = R170,000 ($14,575 AUD) ($7,225 US)

TOTAL: R275,000 ($23,590 AUD) ($15,295 US)
